Teaching dance is a great responsibility – you are tasked with creating a safe and comfortable environment, teaching movement safely and transferring knowledge. This teacher training makes YOU the best teacher YOU can be, it is applicable to any style of dance.
Lisa is uniquely qualified to offer this certification. A second generation teacher, she has been teaching dance, movement and more for over 16 years. She is a certified ACE Group Fitness Instructor, has taught at the collegiate level at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Western University, Warren Wilson College and the University of Maryland.
Her interest in teaching has lead her to study cognitive development and movement, Fleming’s VARK Learning styles, Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence theories and their applications to movement. She has taught movement in a variety of places including schools, eating disorder recovery clinics, women’s retreats, dance studios, correctional facilities and more.
She has taught aerobics, group fitness, hip hop, bellydance, kids dance, creative movement, bollywood and bhangra, SAT, MCAT, GRE and LSAT prep, math, and Spanish. She is adjunct faculty at the University of North Carolina and also teaches at Western Carolina University. She is a teaching artist in the City of Asheville and Buncombe County Schools, is on the registry of TAPAS Teaching Artists and is a senior resident artist for the LEAF Festival.

Claire Metz is a multi-talented performer from East Tennessee. A skilled Tribal Fusion Belly Dancer, she is also well versed in Poi Spinning and Fire Arts. She is known for her strong technique in dance as well as for seamlessly fusing belly dance and poi in her signature style. She has performed with several renowned troupes over the years, including Shadhavar Tribal Duo, Gypsyville Belly Dance, and Panty Raid! Burlesque, but has most recently performed as a soloist and collaborator with local performers in her hometown of Knoxville, TN. A natural born teacher, she began teaching Poi in 2005 and Tribal Fusion Belly Dance in 2007. Since then she has taught workshops regionally and at several well-known festivals including Bonnaroo, and TribOriginal Music and Arts Festival.
In 2012 Claire founded Humaya Tribal Fusion Dance Company and Student Troupe. Based in Knoxville, TN at Broadway Academy of Performing Arts, Humaya Tribal Fusion is Knoxville’s latest dance adventure!
Claire runs a tribal fusion school in Knoxville and will be joining Studio Zahiya to lead the Tribal Fusion program.
Sera Sahara currently hails from Bryson City, NC. She is proud to dance with Raqs Azure, the professional bellydance company at Studio Zahiya and mentors under Lisa Zahiya. She has been belly dancing for over four years and has a dance background in ballet and modern.
Sera along with her dance partner Laura teach belly dance in Bryson City, NC. She is co-founder of Smoky Mountain Shimmy who has brought belly dance to Bryson City and offers weekly kids and adult technique classes as well as Sera’s own brand of cardio dance, Shimmy Fit. Charlotte is an Asheville native, and has lived in WNC for over 20 years. She currently attends Western Carolina University, and is working toward a Graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling. She also runs her own life coaching business, “AFGO Coaching,” and works for Studio Zahiya assisting with marketing and events. Charlotte has been bellydancing with the Studio for over two years. She teaches a cardio and conditioning class, is a proud member of Lisa’s troupe Raqs Sapphire, and dances regularly at Dobra Tea and Jerusalem Garden.
In 2012 she participated in the “Belly-Off in the ‘Burgh” competition in Pittsburgh with fellow Studio dancers and their troupe won “Best Troupe Performnace.” She lives in Montford with her curious and sweet 4-year-old daughter.
Charlotte teaches “Bellydance Cardio and Conditioning” at Studio Zahiya, 9am Thursdays, $13 drop-in
Lorena has enjoyed practicing and performing various types of dance her whole life and has previously taught Salsa and Ballroom. She enjoys the variety of styles within Belly Dance along with the cultures and music. She has been heavily concentrating on Belly Dancing for the past few years and is excited to take her dancing to the next level as a new teacher at Studio Zahiya. Not only is she enthusiastically involved with dance, but participates in other artforms as well. She has been playing piano for 10+ years and studied costume design at North Carolina School of the Arts and makes the majority of her own costumes.

Illysa is a lover of dance. She has performed many different genres in her life, including ballet, jazz, bhangra, bellydance, and ballroom. She is an accomplished fitness professional and is certified in Zumba, Zumbatonic, Hip Hop Hustle, Turbokick and more.
Illysa teaches Faith Girl Thursdays at 7pm at Studio Zahiya and many many fitness classes at Anytime Fitness of Asheville
Shu’la is a World Dance performer and instructor. She began training in 2004. Shu’la received her Teaching Certification from the award-winning, international performer and instructor, Lisa Zahiya. She now teaches Beginner and Intermediate Belly Dance classes and Bollywood Dance for Children and Adults at Steppin Out Studio in Wilkesboro, NC. Shu’la loves and studies many styles of World Dance, with a special fondness for folkloric dance. Shu’la is currently studying Khaleegy, Tunisian and Turkish Romani. Shu’la is also a graduate of Lisa’s Teaching Dance to Children Training.
Angie D is a Fusion Bellydance performer and instructor from Kingsport, TN. Her background is in percussive dance, including Irish Step Dance and Competitive Clogging.
Angie is a member of Studio Zahiya’s professional bellydance company, Raqs Azure and is the founder of the Mona Lisa Bellydance Company and its student troupe, The Tenacious D’s.
Angie D has had a passion for teaching since an early age when she began giving private instruction and leading team and group practices in her earlier dance styles. This passion has since grown and become one of the most fulfilling aspects of her bellydance career. She has special interests in teaching technique & mechanics, and helping students achieve their personal development goals.
